A synthetic climbing jacket made with PrimaLoft® Gold insulation. Engineered for warmth in cold, damp conditions.
  • Product Description

The Alpine Series Pulsar is a synthetic climbing jacket for cold, damp conditions. Its proven combination of technical fabrics and fill is ideal above the snowline.

PrimaLoft® Gold insulation is lightweight, water resistant, and exceptionally warm for its weight. It's made from 55% post-consumer content, and we've used it in two ways. There's more through the body for warmth where you need it, and a little less in the hood and arms so you can move freely.

A Pertex Quantum outer maximises the insulation's efficiency and it's also made from 100% recycled nylon. It feels soft and light to touch, and a DWR finish encourages light rain and snow to bead roll off its surface.

Underarm lift patterning ensures you can reach where you need to. The helmet-compatible hood is adjustable on the fly, and you can cinch the hem using the tabs in each hand pocket.

Our Alpine Series is the result of our partnership with the New Zealand Alpine Team (NZAT). This team of elite mountaineers demand premium lightweight equipment that doesn't compromise performance.

The main and inner fabrics, and the fill are bluesign® approved, which means they were manufactured with the responsible use of resources.

Good value
Lightweight and warm. A bit on the smaller side and hugging fit but still fit nicely under my rain/windbreaker layer. Got it during the sale so good value.

Tramping Insulation Layer
So far so good. Purchased to use as lightweight an insulation layer for tramping. Have numerous polar fleece and old school wool garments (swanndri wool shirts), but they are bulky and weigh more. The Pulsar packs down quite small and weighs 400gm for a size 12. Also it's synthetic not down so don't have to worry about wet/damp conditions. I'm ordinarily a 10 in Macpac clothing but went the next size up so I had room for layers. It fits well. A handy addition to my tramping kit.

Good jacket
I recently wore this jacket to China in 6 degree windy days. I did some light walking and climbed part of the great wall. The jacket kept me warm and allowed good freedom of movement. It didn't rain so I'm not sure how waterproof it would be. It was easy to wash when I got home having worn it daily for two weeks. I got the impression it would perform well at lower temperatures as long as you weren't just standing around.

Great Jacket for urban or outdoor
This is my second jacket in this model. I love it. Very lightweight and surprisingly rugged. I wear my old one while I commute on my bike in London, it is warm and stays warm when it's wet.
The new one is smart enough to wear when going out and the hood is great in the wind and rain.

Nice and toasty but bit tight
I got the blue color of this jacket. I used it for tramping especially in the winter season. It kept me really nice and warm as I am the type who feel cold quite easily. I am petite person. It's true to its size; only downside is the chest area. It's bit tight around the bust considering I do not have wide chest. Overall, a good buy. ????

Does this jacket size big or small?

The fit is accurate to size for me. If you want to wear a bulky underlayer you may want to size up. For me that would make the sleeves too long. Best to try it on before buying.

Will this fit under the prophet shell jacket if used as an insulation layer for climbing?

Hi Jess,

Yes, this would fit under a Prophet, or you could also look at the Icefall Jacket too.

Thanks,
The Macpac Team

Is this jacket good for below 5 degree weather?

Yea you should be good for 0-5degrees if you’re layering well with other clothing and add beanie etc. I wouldn’t say this jacket is designed for that level of cold for long periods of time. I use it in 0 in winter but not for hours on end, just commute.
The Sundowner would be more suited for those temperatures for long period of time! I purchased the sundowner for my travel to Iceland and it worked perfectly!

How is the warmth on this compared to the Sundowner jacket?

I own both jackets and I intentionally purchased this one because it’s lighter weight and less warm as the sundowner. With and extra fleece layer underneath you can achieve the same warmth however. In SA I prefer to layer my clothing as the temperature is never consistently cold! LOVE the sundowner too, just too warm for SA temperatures, I would recommend using the sundowner in climates around 0deg, and the Pulsar in climates around 5-10deg.
Also prefer the Pulsar as it’s synthetic and I got drenched last night but it still kept me warm and dried quickly. Sundowner would find rain more difficult due to the duck down filling.

What is the fill power/warmth rating of this jacket?

Hi Emily,

This jacket has synthetic PrimaLoft Gold insulation. These are equivalent to 750 fill goose down, please note we don't temperature rate clothing items.

Thanks,
the Macpac team

Is this jacket considered “vegan”?

Hi Brooke,

Yes, this jacket is vegan.

Is this waterproof?

The outer fabric has some water repellency (i.e. a light shower will bead on the top) but it’s not strictly speaking water ‘proof’. However, if you’re caught out in a heap of rain the insulation is synthetic so you’ll still stay warm even if it wets out - the wonders of Primoloft! Definitely worth the money. Easier to care for than down as well.

How does this jacket differ from the Sou’ west Primaloft women’s jacket? (Aside from different colour options)

Hi Melissa,

The main difference is a slightly different outer material, and the Pulsar is designed with a larger hood to be able to fit over a climbing helmet.

Thanks,
The Macpac Team

Would anyone know if this jacket would be suitable to do the Overland Track in Tassie in Summer months?

PrimaLoft, warm even when damp
